When seeking to purchase an engagement ring many people are shocked by the price of a diamond. A high quality 1 carat diamond will set you back at least 6,000 dollars. In technical terms the definition I am using for a high quality diamond is a diamond in the D-F color range with a VVS2-IF clarity and a minimum very good cut. That minimum 6,000 dollar price tag is when buying from the best value online jewelry stores such as jamesallen.com or bluenile.com. The price will be much higher if you are purchasing from a mall jeweler.
7.0 MM Round Brilliant Cut Forever One Loose Moissanite by Charles & Colvard – Very Good Cut (1.10ct Actual Weight, 1.20ct Diamond Equivalent Weight)-Amazon Link
There is however an excellent alternative to diamond and that is Forever One Moissanite. Moissanite was first discovered by Henri Moissan while examining rock samples from a meteor crater located in Canyon Diablo, Arizona, in 1893. At first, he mistakenly identified the crystals as diamonds, but in 1904 he identified the crystals as what would later be called moissanite.
To most people moissanite is indistinguishable from diamonds, including to Henri Moissan who first discovered it.
Moisanite is the second hardest gem second only to diamond and is a 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale. That does not tell the whole story though as it is less likely to chip than diamond.
The sparkling as measured by the brilliant refractive index and its fire dispersion is actually higher than a diamond.
Only since 2015 has moissanite been sold at a quality and grade comparable to a top quality diamond. Forever One is a colorless gem and was released in 2015 by Charles & Colvard. Before that moissanite could only be bought that was of a yellow hue and comparable to a diamond of a lower quality.
A 7mm Forever One Moissanite is much cheaper than a diamond and arguably is of superior beauty. A 7mm forever one is comparable to a 1.2 carat diamond which will be much more than 6,000 dollars.
I purchased this stone and it is absolutely stunning.
I would recommend buying a setting from jamesallen.com as they will set your moissanite into most of the ring settings they sell for free. Bluenile.com does not offer this service.
Amazon also has an excellent selection of completed moissanite rings that will save you thousands of dollars over a diamond.
This ring is just one example.
